Course Content
- Definition, significance, and characteristics of family businesses
- Core issues in family firms, including succession, innovation, sustainability and M&A
- Differences between family businesses and non-family businesses, especially in relation to goals, long-term orientation, structure, etc.
- Concepts and models of/for family businesses
- Strategic management of the business-owning family and the family-owned business, in particular, focus on topics related to succession, governance, and finance
- Contemporary challenges faced by family businesses and potential solutions
- Guest lectures with insights from real-world family business practitioners

Learning Objectives
- Be aware of the specific relevance of family firms to both research and practice
- Understand characteristics of family firms and differences to non-family firms
- Become sensitive to the heterogeneity of family firms
- Learn about family firm theories and their applications
- Apply theoretical frameworks to two real-life family firm cases
- Reflect on challenges and opportunities through direct exchange with family entrepreneurs
- Engage with practitioner insights from guest lectures and ask informed questions in Q&A sessions
- Prepare for working in a family firm or in a consulting firm (for family firms)
