Performance Management and Controlling - Advanced Controlling

Course Content

The first part of the module "Advanced Controlling" focuses on potential control problems and selected control frameworks. Students will gain insights into specific management control systems, such as budgeting and performance measurement systems.

The second part of the module focuses on management accounting. Based on case studies, students will learn how to apply several management accounting tools, such as activity-based costing and target costing.

In the third part, classroom discussions will revolve around strategic management accounting and control issues. For example, students will learn how to develop a Balanced Scorecard. In addition, we will talk about the roles of controllers and management accountants and the challenges in developing these roles in the future.

Intended Learning Outcomes and Competencies

Students will learn to recognize opportunities and challenges in aligning managers‘ and employees‘ behavior with organizational goals and strategies.

Instruction Type

In addition to lectures and team-based case study work, students’ learning experience will be complemented by guest lectures. Invited guest speakers (e.g., CFOs or senior controllers) will share their experiences on contemporary management accounting practices and their personal views on current challenges of the finance function.
